Next time you visit Palm Springs, we highly recommend taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up to San Jacinto Mountain, 8500 feet above sea level. The ride up alone has an amazing view, as does the tramway station at the top. There’s also a couple restaurants and a small bar.
You can go and just hang out and picnic, but if you love to hike, there are more than 54 miles of trails (don’t forget your free Wilderness Pass from the ranger station when you get there). Here are just a few:
- Desert View Hike: 1.5 mile loop
- Round Valley Loop: ~5 miles
- Add Wellman’s Divide for a great view and 7 miles total (we saw deer on this one!)
- Add San Jacinto Peak for 11.5 miles total
Just remember to pack good walking or hiking shoes, and check the weather! It can be dramatically different up there than on the desert floor.
The Tram Ride
The tram ride is gentle and smooth. It slowly rotates 360 degrees, and has windows all around, so you get a good view no matter where you stand. It sways just a little bit going over the towers, which kids love, but if you are unsteady on your feet, head to the center of the tram (away from the windows), where there is one bench seat and a couple stationary bars to hang on to.
